Biblioscape 7.18 release

Version 7.18 patch can be downloaded at http://www.biblioscape.com/download/bsp7_patch.zip. The above URL always contains the latest patch which includes all the earlier 7.x patches. Please quit Biblioscape first and unzip the downloaded file to your Biblioscape installation folder to replace the old files. Here is the list of bugs fixed and new features added in version 7.18.

  • Bug fix: In categories tab of references, notes, tasks, and charts modules, click the Count button generates "TProgress out of range" error when there is no category item listed.
  • New feature: In the categories tab of references, notes, tasks, and charts modules, new popup commands are added to let user change category item color.
  • Bug fix: Search query is not displayed properly in the application status label.
  • Bug fix: When editing category using the categories tab in other modules, not all the corresponding tags are updated.
  • Improvement: When deleting a cateogry using the categories tab in other modules, user will be prompted if the deleted category should be removed from other records that are tagged with it.
  • New feature: When user hold down Ctrl key to select more than one category, Biblioscape will retrieve records that are tagged by all the selected categories.

Ctrl-Select Categories

New feature: When user hold down Ctrl key to select more than one category, Biblioscape will retrieve records that are tagged by all the selected categories.

Two issues:

1. I think it would be much more useful, at least in my case, if this function used OR rather than AND operator so that if I selected two categories I could see the display of records that belong in either of them. This is also the case in the other software that uses categories or tags.

2. It is also possible to highlight several categories using Shift + left click. But this seems to do nothing apart from the highlighting. It would be logical to make this function as expected bringing up the results from the highlighted categories.

It will be cool if AND is

It will be cool if AND is used when Ctrl is down, and OR is used when both Ctrl and Shift is down.

Yes, even better. Given

Yes, even better. Given this, maybe Alt can be NOT? Like in Photoshop, etc. - Ctrl=addition, Alt=subtraction? An alternative highlight colour would be necessary I guess.

SR

Ctrl will be AND, Ctrl+Alt

Ctrl will be AND, Ctrl+Alt will be OR. Highlighting color will stay the same. The status bar label will display the realtioinship. We will try to add this in version 7.19. Thanks. In the future, this can be applied to search folder.

Not NOT? I am sure what you

Not NOT?

I am sure what you suggest will be very convenient. Also, the ability to search Look Up results, keywords, etc. in the same way would be great too. Is that what you mean?

NOT operator is confusing

NOT operator is confusing and rarely used by most users. Also when more than 3 items selected, it is hard to implement. Most fields in lookup search are single value fields. So AND operator is not useful. Only the author and keyword lookup can benefit from this.

Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for the explanation. Yes, keywords is what I was thinking of. But not so important, I guess...

While we are at it... Do you

While we are at it... Do you think something like Category Intersections in Evernote would be useful? I use this functionality quite a bit there even though I am not sure their visual navigation is the easiest around..... With it Evernote supports all three Boolean operations.

I think it is useful in some

I think it is useful in some cases. Biblioscape 7.x will start with simple features first in the categories pane. You can build complicated query with NOT operator in advanced search pane.  Thanks.

Sure, thanks.

Sure, thanks.

v. 7.19: Booleans

< Ctrl will be AND, Ctrl+Alt will be OR

I notice that it is not in 7.19. Hopefully, it is coming. Just thought I would confirm the continuing interest.

Error Message.

Since I installed the patch for 7.18 I have developed a new problem that is somehow related to my copy of Biblioscape on my USB drive.
Biblioscape functions normally if the flash drive is not installed.
I primarily use the USB dirive as a backup but also to carry with me in case I need to refer to my bibliography at work.
I get the error message only if the flash drive is installed on my PC. I am not running anything from the flash drive.
When I try to run Biblioscape on my PC I get the following message when I open Biblioscape and each time I open any records or notes.
Windows - No Disk
Exception Process Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c 4 75b6b9c
Cancel Try Again Continue
The records or notes open, but I keep getting the error message each time. The only way to fix this is to eject the USB drive and reboot the computer. Just removing the flash drive alone does not solve the problem.
I did not have this problem before.
I have tried rebuilding and packing the database. This has not helped.
It is a scandisk flash drive with U3 Launchpad Version 1.4.0,2

Reinstalling Biblioscape on PC fixed problem

Reinstalling Biblioscape on my PC fixed this problem.
I am guessing that I caused the issue by improperly installing Biblioscape on/from the USB Drive instead of copying the installation file from my PC to the USB drive per instructions which I have now read more carefully.

I cannot reproduce this. I

I cannot reproduce this. I am wondering if this is related to your drive letter mapping. Where Biblioscape is installed? Could you see if you can reproduce this on another PC?

Cannot reproduce this on my laptop

Paul,
I cannot reproduce this on my laptop. (I have not registered Biblioscape yet on the laptop. Not sure if that would make a difference.)
On my PC Biblioscape is located under a file called "=Bib" in "My Documents". My bibliography is "1Bib" in "=Bib."
Files are set up in the same way on the flash drive.

Problem with USB Drive

Hello,
just a wild guess:
In the folder where Biblioscape is installed, there is a file named dbsys.ini .
Open this file with e.g. notepad (windows "editor") and have a look at the file pathes specified in this file.

Same info on both PC and USB Drive

Database Directory=C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Masson\My Documents\=Bib\tools\
Private Directory=C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Masson\My Documents\=Bib\tools\
File Directory=C:\Documents and Settings\Bob Masson\My Documents\=Bib\tools\

directory settings in dbsys.ini

This looks OK. My guess was because when I had both Biblioscape 6 and 7 installed, one entry in dbsys.ini pointed to the version 7 directory and another entry to the version 6 directory.
