Is it possible to sort folders in the folder view in a customised way? I want to set up my folders so that there is a "General" folder at the top, followed by "Background", "Research methods", "Read urgently" and "New imports". I know I can sort folder in alphabetical order, but how can I set them up in this order?
Also, I don't understand why some of my reference folders appear above categories and notes in the folder list and some below. Is there a system to this?
Dennis
Dennis, you can re-order
Dennis, you can re-order items in the same level by hold down the Ctrl key first. More can be found at http://support.biblioscape.com/node/694
Why not give them
Why not give them numbers?
E.g.:
1 - General
2 - Background
3 - Research methods
Etc.
Good idea
Yes, that's a good workaround, thanks. But it should be possible to move folders anyway. Someone else seems to have the same request (http://support.biblioscape.com/node/691).
Dennis
You can do that by hold down
You can do that by hold down the
Ctrl(sorry, shoudl be the Alt) key, then drag and drop items. The dropped item will be moved just below the target item. There is no need to add numbers before a title.Ctrl + drag and drop does
Ctrl + drag and drop does not work. When I do that, a warning window "Invalid variant operation" appears.
Same here
I have the same problem. In the Reference module and the folder view, I select one folder and keep the mouse button depressed. I press Ctrl, and the cursor changes to a "+" sign. I try to drop the folder onto another folder (which should place it afterwards). The cursor changes back and nothing happens. I click on the folder and an error occurs. This is either the "Invalid variant operation" or a fatal error causing Biblioscape to close.
OS here is Windows ME, Biblioscape 7.01.
EDIT: This is very confusing! Here we're talking about drag & drop while holding Ctrl, in the book page you're talking about holding Alt. Neither seems to work properly. The method using Ctrl causes this error. The method using Alt works well for rearranging folders at the child level. But if you want to sort folders at the root level, it doesn't work. Instead of placing Folder A underneath Folder B at the same level, the drag & drop using Alt seems to make ALL other folders child folders of Folder B. Surely this is a bug?

Sorry, my mistake. It should
Sorry, my mistake. It should be the Alt key, not Ctrl key. Hold down Alt key first, then use mosue to select and drag.
The re-ordering bug at the folder root level will be fixed in 7.02 release in this weekend.
Thanks,
Paul
Another problem
Thanks Paul!
I noticed something else to do with sorting folders. It appears that when Biblioscape is restarted, the folder list has had the sorting removed. It seems to have the same effect as the "Remove sorting" command in the folder list.
Can you reproduce this? Is it possible to save the manual sorting of folders in the database?
Dennis
The changes will be saved
The changes will be saved between sessions in 7.02 release. Thanks.
Still not working
Paul,
This still isn't working in Biblioscape 7.02. Moving folders at root level by holding the Alt key works well now, but the sorting of folders isn't preserved after a restart or database rebuild. I've e-mailed you some screenshots before and after the restart or rebuild.
Dennis
In 7.03, please use Ctrl
In 7.03, please use Ctrl key instead of Alt key. Sorting will be remembered between sessions too.
Still not working in 7.04
Hi Paul,
I'm trying this with Biblioscape 7.04, and it's still not working! A database rebuild or a restart of Biblioscape both have the same effect: folders are rearranged with the folder onto which the last folder was dragged during the sorting appearing as a parent folder for all others. This makes no sense.
This is the same problem about which I sent you screenshots referring to version 7.02. It happens whether I use my own database or the sample database included, so it's not a DB problem.
The only difference seems to be that the "remove sorting" context menu item now reverts back to the structure given above (with one folder becoming a parent for all others) rather than removing all parent-child relationships.
Dennis
Dennis, this bug will be
Dennis, this bug will be fixed in the next release. I will upload a patch again later today. You can give it a test. More bugs plus this one will be fixed in 7.05 release. Thanks.
I'm experiencing the same
I'm experiencing the same kind of behavior of BS7, which makes categories useless for me, see http://support.biblioscape.com/node/660#comment-1376
Please let me know what did
Please let me know what did you do exactly. Which module, and which control was used. Thanks.
