Problems with categories

This is a list of problems I'm encountering with categories in Biblioscape 7.01.

1.) When importing a database from Biblioscape 5.x, the program automatically creates a set of categories called "Old folders". This is a good idea for some users, but it should be optional. Would it be possible to insert a dialog asking if the user wants old folders to be imported as categories?

1.a) It doesn't seem to make sense to me to have one set of "Old folders" categories and one set of new categories; I only want the new categories. But when I delete the "Old folders" categories, the entry "Old folders" doesn't disappear from the Lookup menu for categories (i.e., the "Categories" tab on the right). It is still listed there and produces an "access violation" error message when you click on it, or a "TProgressBar property out of range" error message when you click on the "count" button. I'm not sure if this is a problem in the database rebuild or a bug in Biblioscape itself. I suspect the latter problem is the one I encountered when trying to import a V5 database with no folders (see "Can't convert Biblioscape 5 database").

2.) The "Categorize" command doesn't seem to work reliably. When a reference is selected, I think the command is supposed to open a list of categories with tick boxes and the buttons Add, Remove, and Close. In my database, only the Close button is displayed, and the categories ticked are not saved with the reference. It is still possible to do this by opening the reference in the reference editor, selecting the categories there, and clicking "Save and close". But the "Categorize" command seems to be a problem.

3.) The main grid for showing references includes "Colour categories" as a column. This is supposed to show the colour of a category that the reference belongs to.

3.a) Is it possible to remove this column if you don't want it?
3.b) What happens if a reference belongs to more than one category?
3.c) Even after several database rebuilds, no colour is shown in the reference main grid under the "Colour categories" column. The colour only appears in the lookup list of categories in the right pane. This happens with my database imported from Biblioscape 5, but it works well with the sample database. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Error Message every time I hit "New Category" button

Paul,

I get the following error message everytime I hit New Category:

DBISAM Engine Error #9729 Duplicate Key found in the index" of the table 'categor'

Then I press OK and the New Category window opens.

FYI I'm working with v7.13 on a Windows Vista machine. I would like to get rid of this error message.

Have I done something wrong?

Tks.

There is an index

There is an index corruption. Please restart Biblioscape and go to "File | Database | Rebuild Database".

1. For users who don't have

1. For users who don't have many-to-many realtionship in their old database, they can just ignore this folder or delete it. When prompted, user may not fully understand the issue and choose not to preserve the many-to-many relationship.

1a. This av error is caused by a bug. It happens where refresh an empty categories folder. It will be fixed in 7.02 release.

2. When more than one record is selected, you get the Add and Remove buttons. Not category is ticked because it is not possible with many records selected. When only one record is selected, existing categories will be ticked.

3a. You can remove that column by go to "View | Ccurrent View | Field Chooser...".

3b. It can show up to 4 colors per record. When needed, you can put categories in different folders. When you switch to another categories folder, the color coding will change accordingly.

3c. I cannot reproduce this. Is the right categories folder selected on the "Categories" tab?

(Bsc 7.01)
re 1. When I select a record and choose "categorize" from the context menu, I then have to select either "categories" or "old folders". Same in the record editor window. This is annoying. I'd like to have my Bsc6 folders merged in the new categories and these displayed immediately without having to choose between "old folders" and "categories".

re 2. I experience similar behavior. When I select one (only one) record and choose  "categorize" from the context menu, then select "old folders", none of the checkboxes is checked. (Neither in the record editor window.) I simply close the "categorize" window and choose "categorize" again, then the correct checkboxes are checked. After this operation, "rebuild database" finds and fixes corruptions.
This means to correctly display the "old folders" associations, I have to "categorize" each record twice??

1. You can delete the "categories" folder and then rename "old folders" to "categories". We created "old folders" to keep the many-to-many relationship and "categories" for users to added new ones. You can delete it without problem.

2. I cannot reproduce this. Are you sure that record is tagged with any category in the currently selected categories folder?

category tags still not shown on first access to record

1. Before having seen your reply, I tried to move the "old folders" into the "categories" by changing the entry in the "folder" field of the category. See screenshot.
folder field of categoryscreenshot: folder field of category
This made the old folders appear under "categories" in the record editing window but did not move them into the "categories" folder in the folder tree.
I then deleted the "categories" folder and renamed "old folders" to "categories". Now when I select a record and choose "categorize", I get a dropdown menu containing "categories" two times, one of which is empty, the other containing the "old folders" contents. Maybe caused by my previous attempt to move the "old folders" into the "categories". See screenshot.

2. Sure. On the first "categorize" of the record, no category is tagged although at the bottom the category is listed as text. See screenshot.

After clicking "Close" and then again "categorize", the category is tagged. See screenshot.

After each such categorize operation, "rebuild database" finds and fixes corruptions.

categories problem seems solved

I deleted the Bsc7 database, copied the Bsc6 database into the Bsc7 folder and let Bsc7.01 redo the conversion. Then I deleted "Categories" and renamed "Old folders" into "Categories".
It seems that this fixed most of the problems. After this, there was once a fixing of database corruption but no further.
The only problem remaining is two instances of "Categories" showing up in the dropdown menus.

Version 7.02 will fix the

Version 7.02 will fix the bug which cause deleted categories folder still show up in the drop down list. Thanks.

Thanks

Paul,

Thanks for your help.

1a. Will the non-existent folder also disappear from the drop-down menu when this bug is fixed? I don't think there's any need for it to appear there.

2. I'm sorry, I'm an idiot. I didn't understand this before, but of course that's how it works.

3c. It's working now. Maybe there was a problem with my database. It is now showing the colours.

Showing delete categories

Showing delete categories folder in the drop down list is a bug. It will be fixed in 7.02 release. Thanks.

In B7.02Notes

In B7.02

Notes modules|Categories. Create a new category. Right-click and choose Create Child category. Instead of creating a child, Biblioscape deletes the name of the existing category and highlights the field for editing as it during Rename. If a new name is typed it stays.

If I right-click again (I only have one category at the moment for testing or at least only one is showing), the dialog opens that is named with the name of the original parent category I created.

If I restart Biblioscape, multiple named and unnamed categories are displayed all at the root level.

Selecting one of them (or all of them) changes nothing. Even after a restart of Biblioscape.

This is a new database and I have just rebuilt it to be sure.

It seems, this happens if I make a new category and attempt to create its child before giving it a name. If I change focus to another module and come back – the empty categories are displayed as after the restart.

Also a question:

Why is it possible to create categories without selecting a categories folder? And if this is intended, why do they not appear anywhere else?

Sorry about the confused description. I do feel confused.

Seems to be a bug.
