Hi Paul
Thanks for releasing the B7 Alpha 3 version. Many of the Japanese errors have been fixed, but some still remain. Here are the ones I have come across after a quick test.
First, to have Japanese fonts appear correctly, I first made the following settings:
(A) Tools>Options>Format Manuscript>Check “Format Double Language Characters”>in “Language Character Set” select “128 Shift Jis (Japanese)”>in “Font for the selected language” select “MS Asahi”.
(B) Tools>Options>General Display>in “Windows font” change default font and select “MS Asahi”
(C) Tools>Options>General Display>in “References module preview” change default font for “Formatted preview display” to “MS Asahi”.
NOTE: For Japanese to appear properly, both the Format Manuscript and General Displays have to be changed.
Encountering the following 3 problems with the above settings selected:
(1) Unable to instantly add extra text to a note previously inputted in Japanese
Start B7 A3>Go>Notes>Click icon “New Note”>Note window opens>Input title of note in Japanese (no problem occurs)>Type Japanese text in main window (no problem occurs)>Click icon “Save and Close”>New Note in Japanese appears in Note list module. NOW … Double click the Japanese Note>open Japanese Note window>Place cursor at the end of the previously entered Japanese text …
PROBLEM OCCURS= no matter what letter on the keyboard is typed no text appears on the screen (like the input is locked).
However, if the input is method is switched to English, able to enter English text. After doing this, switch back to Japanese input and again able to continue inputting Japanese.
(2) Error Window Occurs when making a new note after opening a reference.
Start B7 A3>Double click in “References Window” the reference “1979 Hall …” >Independent reference window for this window opens>Select “New Note” (on the right-hand side of this window)>”Create a Linked Note window opens>Type in Japanese text after “Title>Click “OK”>Error message “sample.bsl – Biblioscape X Cannot focus a disabled or invisible window.”>Click OK to error message>Independent reference window appears with new Japanese note title displayed>Try to input in Japanese in note text window. However, if the input is method is switched to English, able to enter English text. After doing this, switch back to Japanese input and again able to continue inputting Japanese.
Click “Save and Close” Icon>Go>Notes … the newly created note does not appear in the list of Notes Module.
However, if the “Note” icon in the “Folder” window on the left is double-clicked, the newly created Japanese note appears in the Note list.
(3) Previously deleted Notes appear for selection as linked note in Independent Reference Window
Start B7 A3>Go>Notes>Delete Japanese Note>Go>References> Double click in “References Window” the reference “1979 Hall …” >Independent reference window for this window opens>Select “New Note” (on the right-hand side of this window)>”Create a Linked Note window opens>Type in Japanese text after “Title>Click “OK”>Error message “sample.bsl – Biblioscape X Cannot focus a disabled or invisible window.”>Click OK to error message>Independent reference window appears with new Japanese note title displayed>ERROR … The note that should have been deleted appears as a note that can be linked to. Further, if the supposedly deleted note is double clicked, the note opens with all previously inputted text.
As I wrote, these are the problems that I have first come across. I will keep testing and report any other errors. I am hoping you can correct the errors above.
Cheers!

5. Can't search for Japanese terms using "Look for" bar or Fast Search (in Search tab).
The only way I can get results with Japanese searches is when using Advanced Search.
I will do some test.

Interesting. I guess that means that in version 6 a "Smart Search" (which does work with Japanese) isn't actually an indexed search, even though it's accessed via and listed under "Indexed Search".
The nice thing about Smart Search is that it's very quick and easy to use, since you just type your terms in the box and hit Enter. Advanced Search in v.7 is a lot less convenient to use due to all the mouse clicks required.
The smart search is still
The smart search is still there. It is under the tab "Old".

I just noticed that the "Old" tab is only available when I'm working in the Folders module. It doesn't appear if I'm in Categories or any other module. Any chance you could make it available from all modules? Thanks.

The "old" search tab is only available for the References module. It wasn't available to any other module in older version of Biblioscape. We have no plan to put this legacy search into other modules. Thanks.
Great! Thanks.

We will try to get this fixed in B7A4. Thanks.
Chris, drop me a note ...
Hi Chris
It would be nice to be in contact with someone who is using Biblioscape in Japanese. If you would like, could you drop me an email? You can contact me by clicking on my name to open up my profile page and selecting "contact". Hope to hear from you.
Paul,
Just in case my message distracted you from Chris's message, kindly follow up Chris's bug report above.
Cheers to you both!

1. This problem can be solved by pressing the Enter key first. Then you can type in Japanese. I guess the control can not go into edit mode when you only entering one byte. I don't see a way to solve this probem by code.
2. The Japanese text entering problem can be solved by pressing Enter key first. The Biblioscape X Cannot focus a disabled or invisible window I cannot reproduce. Can you do a test to see if this bug only happens with Japanese input. Thanks.
3. This bug will fixed in the next release. Thanks.

Hi Paul
Here are my answers in response to your comments:
>1. This problem can be solved by pressing the Enter key first. Then you can type in Japanese. I guess the control can not go into edit mode when you only entering one byte. I don't see a way to solve this probem by code.
I do not understand the technical issues about coding so I will have to leave that up to you. However, please note that the input mode when I start typing is Japanese, not English. I did try and press Enter first. Because it is an Enter key, it takes me to the start of a new line/paragraph, so I have to press Back Space to place the cursor at the end of where I want to continue inputting text from. It will then, as you suggest, enable me to type in Japanese.
This bug has us both baffled. I wonder why there are no issues at all with using double-byte character input with software like "IdeaMason"? Can you code things in a similiar way? In IdeaMason you don't have to even select and check boxes like you do in Biblioscape. You can just switch the keyboard input to Japanese and Japanese appears no problem in all components of the program.
>2. The Japanese text entering problem can be solved by pressing Enter key first. The Biblioscape X Cannot focus a disabled or invisible window I cannot reproduce. Can you do a test to see if this bug only happens with Japanese input. Thanks.
This bug ONLY occurs when Tools>Options>Format Manuscript>Check "Format Double Byte Languages" is selected. When the "Format Double Byte Languages" is NOT checked (thus only able to use English) this error does NOT occur.

Great to hear. Thank you! :)
Looking forward to what you can work out with the remaining bugs.
