Japanese Conformant

Paul

Sorry to sound like a broken record, and I hate keeping to bring it up, but both Biblioscape beta and version 6 DO NOT support Japanese in the note module and the biblioword module. (Though BiblioWord does not seem to appear in the beta version now.) Further,  when I capture a Japanese page from the Internet to where it goes into a note, Japanese does not appear. I have done everything you suggested (clicking on double byte selection and choosing  "128 Shift Jis (Japanese)" and played around even more with other settings in different places.

Out of all my applications, it is ONLY Biblioscape where this problem occurs. Could you please look into this properlly? ... I cannot see how you claim it works with native Japanese OS XP SP", which mine is and it doesn't. It is this very ability that first distinguished Biblioscape from its competitors and I want to keep being a devout supporter of your work.

Please help ... I want to keep on supporting Biblioscape!

Japanese font in the UI

(Sorry, I don't know why this post appeared at the top of the thread like this!)

Just thought I would add that Japanese does seem to work fine most places in the user interface, assuming that you go to Tools | Options | General Display and choose a Japanese font as the "Windows font."

Once I did this, I found that I could use Japanese in folder and category names, and that the names of the months shown on the calendars in Tabs pane | Search | Advanced Search also show up correctly in Japanese (for me anyway, as my computer is XP Japanese, and BS7 seems to inherit the month names from the user's system).

One place in the UI where Japanese does not get rendered correctly, however, is in the status bar (at the very bottom of the main window). For instance, if I name a folder using Japanese characters and then select that folder, the name of that folder should show in the status bar. It does, but it's in garbage characters instead of Japanese.

If you reply the original

If you reply to the original post, it will be displayed at the top because the replies are sorted by descending order. The statusbar Japanese rendering problem is fixed. Thanks.

Darren, If you have the

Darren, If you have the "Format double byte language" box checked in the "Tools | Optiosn" window "Format Manuscript" tab, you will have "Note (CJK)" tab instead of "Note" tab in note editor. For reference editor, you will have "Rich Text (CJK)" instead of "Rich Text". Do you have the "... (CJK)" tab displayed?

Windows font and References Preview Font - need to use Japanese

Hi Paul

I am glad the Japanese fonts for the note module has been sorted out.

There is just one other thing I need to point out. Just as Chris has pointed out in his posting above, you have to also change the font in the General Display to Japanese fonts for it to be displayed properlly in Japanese. This is not a problem if you are working exclusively in Japanese, but I use a mix of Japanese and English. This means that with the Japanese font being selected in the General Display, the English fonts shown are actually what are contained within the Japanese font character list. Unfortunately, the English characters in the Japanese fonts are really ugly. Normally when showing English I like to use Times Roman, but do not have this choice as I have to select the Japanese font.

It would be nice to have a work around this, where I can use the IME to change between Japanese and English instead of having to choose Japanese characters in the various options windows. (Meaning that to do away with having to be forced to choose Japanese, Chinese or Korean and just have the program recognize the IME when I input in Japanese or English and have the Biblioscape properlly show this. The way Biblioscape handles Japanese, Chinese and Korean is an troublesome and awkard. They have managed to solve this problem with such programs as IdeaMason.)

I hope you can come up with a better solution.

Cheers!

With Biblioscape, there is

With Biblioscape, there is no need to change the font when you set Japanese as the default Windows language. You can keep using Times New Roman. You have to change the "Format Manuscript" font if you want to generate formatted reference in Japanese. But there is no need to change the main display font. You can just switch IME to enter Japanese.

Changing Window Fonts - Japanese/English

Paul

I am using a native Japanese OS of XP SP2. Besides choosing Japanese for the "Format Manuscript", I have to also select a Japanese font in TOOLS>OPTIONS>GENERAL DISPLAY>WINDOWS FONT & REFERENCES MODULE PREVIEW.

If this is not done, then any Japanese inputted appears in scrambled non-Japanese random characters in ALL of the views (Reference, Notes, etc.). Further, if you input Japanese in a Reference Window, without changing WINDOWS FONT & REFERENCES MODULE PREVIEW to Japanese, the Japanese you are typing is appearing in scrambled non-Japanese random characters as you are actually typing! However, once all the options mentioned above are chosen with a Japanese font, the Japanese appears properlly.

So Paul, unfortunately you DO have to set Japanese as the default Windows language.

I hope you can work out a solution.

Darren, I tested it with

Darren, I tested it with Chinese and it works under English Windows 2000. I don't have a non-English windows. Do you have access to a machine with English Windows? Can you give it a test to make sure the problem is related to Japanese windows. Thanks.

Japanese Native XP SP2

Paul

Unfortunately, I only have access to a native Japanese version of XP SP2. So, if you are not having problems with the English version, I can only say there are problems with the Japanese OS version.

Just for your information, when I was testing software for a different company, it was discovered there were different things happening with the IME in Japanese with the Japanese OS compared to Japanese with English OS.

I am sure there are other users of Japanese, so I hope they can offer some assistance and confirm the same problems I am having. You will notice from Chris's posting at the top of this topic that in fact others are having the same problem.

Cheers!

Any Progress?

Hi Paul

Just wondering if you have made any progress with this bug. I wonder if it is particular to native Japanese XP or in other double-byte language OS's as well.

Looking forward to a solution.

Cheers!

Sorry, no progress has been

Sorry, no progress has been made because I cannot reproduce it. I don't have access to native Japanese XP. It works when I test it with Chinese under 2000, XP, and Vista.

Format Double Byte Language Selected

Paul

The "Format double byte language" box is selected in the "Tools | Options" window "Format Manuscript" tab.

So here are the issues:

(1) Reference Editor

In the Reference editor, "Rich Text (CJK)" appears. In the fields of the Reference editor where I type Japanese, Japanese appears with no problem. (And is inputed while I am typing right at the cursor). There are no problems with typing Japanese in the Reference editor.

HOWEVER, when I select "New Reference" and give the reference a name, I can type in Japanese in all tabs (Abstract, Annotation, etc) EXCEPT "note". With the Note tab selected, the Japanese input text I am typing appears at the bottom of the screen. When I press enter, the text moves to the cursor in the window, but is not Japanese. So, as before, Japanese does not work with the Notes.

(2) Note Editor

If I select the "Format double byte language" box and I try to open a new note, the error "sample.bsl - Biblioscape Cannot focus a disable or invisible window" appears. If I click okay on the error widow, the Note window appears but the area where the text is meant to appear is greyed out. HOWEVER, If I click on a tab at the bottom, for example "Note (CJK)" I can start typing in Japanese and Japanese will appear. Then I save and close and the new note appears in the Notes list.

Then when I double click on the new note I just made the error as before ("sample.bsl - Biblioscape Cannot focus a disable or invisible window") appears. I again click okay and again click the tab "Note (CJK)" and the Japanese appears. But this time I cannot input additional text. However, if I do something like press enter to make a new paragraph, I can start typing text again.

Now, here is something interesting, if "Format double byte language" box is NOT selected in the "Tools | Options" window "Format Manuscript" tab then it is possible to open a new note without an error message. However, because only "Note" and not "Note (CJK)" appears, no Japanese can be inputted.

(3) Internet Mode - Page captured as text

If a Japanese page is captured from the Internet Module "as a note", when you go first to the Note module, the note title is selected and the captured text appears in a small window at the bottom. But if you select a different note and then go back to the Japanese note, there is no longer text in the window below. Also, if you double click the note to open the one note, the error "sample.bsl - Biblioscape Cannot focus a disable or invisible window" appears. If I click okay on the error widow, the Note window appears but the area where the text is meant to appear is greyed out. Further the Japanese text that was meant to be captured is not there.

These are certainly strange acting bugs. I hope you can understand my description to be able to correct them. If you need further clarification, just ask.

(4) Biblioscape 6

Since I did not use Biblioscape Version 6 last year to write a Japanese paper, I did not use the various functions like Notes, Internet Page Capture and BiblioWord in Japanese. Trying it out now, I realize I cannot use these functions in Japanese. I had really only tested the reference function which worked fine. So these issues have been here from the start.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
