Changing Web Browser Default

Hi Paul

I notice that Biblioscape uses IE as the default browser for the Internet. Currently I am using a University Internet connection (in the UK) and using a VPN to connect to my University databases at my University in Japan. To access the databases at my University in Japan, I need to change the proxy server. When I do this on IE, it does not work. But when I use another browser - in this case SeaMonkey - it works. (I do not know why this is the case, I have followed all instructions from the IT people. And I don't have the technical expertise to do work it out ... though I have spent hours all ready trying!!!)

So, to cut a long story short, could you incorporate in Biblioscape the option to use a different internet browser for the Internet? At the moment we are forced to use IE, but nearly everyone around me uses Firefox or other such browsers other than IE. At the moment, we don't have that choice with Biblioscape.

For me especially, without being able to use SeaMonkey, I cannot connect to the databases at all, which takes away the most important feature for me in Biblioscape ... the connectivity and importing of Biblioscape data from databases on the Internet.

I do hope you can add this option to change the default browser to the one the user wants.

Looking forward to your response.

I vote for Firefox!!

I'm having problems with IE 7 (Windows XP, German) and use Firefox as default browser. It would be fine if B7 supported it.

Darren, we have to use IE

Darren, we have to use IE because it is available on every Windows machine and very easy to integrate. The proxy setting should work in IE.

Managed to Get IE Working

Hi Paul

After an hour more tinkering I finally managed to have IE working properlly via VPN in Biblioscape. I am glad that finally worked out! :)

At the same time, I still think, if is possible, that there should be an option to change the default browser that the user wants to use. In the past IE has had so many security problems that I switched solely to FireFox which is more secure.  Is it too difficult to create this type of option somewhere in the settings, but leave the initial default browser as IE since everyone has that one if on a Microsoft OS?

Darren, Let's wait and see

Darren, Let's wait and see if there are lots of demands for this. I think FireFox integration is doable. Not sure about the others. The latest IE release is pretty good now. Have you tried it?

support for Firefox

Paul,
I also support the option of Firefox. I have Firefox set to run through the proxy server at the University, which means that I have direct access to all their online subscriptions and databases.

OK, then I support leaving

OK, then I support leaving things as is unless the alternative implementation is very easy. There is lots of more pressing and interesting work that needs doing.

Suporting Firefox

Suporting Firefox is my dream. Please make it come true!

Seems to be some interest ...

Hi Paul

As you can see from the other postings, there seems to be a need to offer an Internet Browser other than IE to use in Biblioscape. What I would like to see is have IE as the default with Biblioscape when it is downloaded, but also have the OPTION to change to another Internet Browser if the user wants to (in a settings window somewhere). It seems the alternative Internet Browser of choice at the moment is case Firefox.

This would mean extra work for your team, but probably well received by all.

Cheers!

Support of integration of Firefox

I support the idee that firefox should be an alternative browser to use in Biblioscape.

Thanks

Claire

Since Firefox is available

Since Firefox is available for free and is becoming very popular, I think it would be a good idea to integrate it. It is also cross-platform, which would in the future enable a port of Biblioscape to systems that don't have IE.
