BiblioWeb 9

What is BiblioWeb

BiblioWeb is a web based database manager for researchers. It is designed to help researchers collecting references, taking notes, managing tasks, categorizing collections. Besides features for individual users, BiblioWeb promote collaboration among a group of users. Users with a common interests can form a group and share references collection among group members. Users can also collaborate on individual level by adding another user as a connection and share your project data with your connections. These social networking features plus a strong project based access control makes BiblioWeb an ideal tool for enterprise use.

What is new in BiblioWeb 9

  • BiblioWeb 9 is a complete rewrite from earlier versions of BiblioWeb. It has made most modules in Biblioscape available on the Web. These includes: References, Notes, Tasks, Categories, and Library modules.
  • BiblioWeb 9 is a Web 2.0 product. Users can invite others to join the same network, add colleagues as connections and send them messages, form a group to promote a common interest.
  • BiblioWeb 9 allows users to control who can access their data at project level. All references, notes, tasks, etc. are organized into projects. A project owner can give his/her connections and the groups he/she joined Read, Write, or Super access privilege to the project.
  • BiblioWeb 9 is Unicode based. All major languages are supported. Users can enter text in several languages for the same record.
  • BiblioWeb 9 is designed to be usable on a smart phone browser. The minimum width needed is 480 pixels. So users can access all their research data from iPhone, iPod Touch, Android phones, etc.

Which BiblioWeb community should I join

A BiblioWeb community is a place where many users put their data in a single database. There are two types of BiblioWeb communities: public community and private community. A public community can be joined by anyone. It is promoted on the web. A private community limits who can join by IP address, etc. It can also be installed behind company firewall.

Biblioscape hosts several public communities for different science disciplines.  Anyone can join these communities. Biblioscape also hosts BiblioWeb communities for other organizations like universities, companies, and academic organizations. These BiblioWeb communities can be either a public one or a private one. If your organization wants to limit outside access for maximum security, BiblioWeb server can also be installed locally on company intraweb.

Upgrade and Licensing Question

This sounds like a nice improvement, Paul.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Since Bsp8 Pro owners have BiblioWeb included, is this a free upgrade or a paid upgrade? Will it be included in the next patch release?
2. I am interested in installing the software on my home server, which is accessible to the outside world (but I am the only person maintaining the database). Is this licensing covered by my Pro agreement?

Thanks,
Glen

1. Major upgrades are not

1. Major upgrades are not free. Version 9 will be a paid upgrade. For version 9, we developed BiblioWeb first. We plan to have a BiblioWeb beta test server set up next month.

2. We have not decided on how to license BiblioWeb 9. It will be similar to BiblioWeb 8, but there will be some changes. But the idea is to allow customers to host the server themselves. We will also offer hosting service.

Thanks,
Paul

will you send an email to

will you send an email to invite beta testers? I would like to try it. Also, when do you expect to launch Bsb9 Pro? Thanks.

We will just post a message

We will just post a message at the forum. We haven't started working on Biblioscape 9. BiblioWeb 9 was done first this time. So I don't have a date for Biblioscape.
