We need a live preview which takes the sample citation text, and shows in real time (as the filters are edited) how the current filters would parse it.
Example: say we have a title in the format:
"TI: blah blah blah foobar (Journal of Irritation)"
And we want to lop off the Journal name so the title field only reads "blah blah blah foobar".
Right now you have to go in, tinker with the editing interface, then close the editing interface, import a sample citation, see if it's doing it right, and if not, delete the imported sample, reopen the edit menu, click edit, make some new changes, then close the edit menu, and try importing your sample all over again to see if it's working right this time.
That whole opening and closing and testing cycle could be totally avoided with a live preview. In fact, the whole interface would be much easier to learn and navigate if one got immediate feedback as soon as one tried to change anything, showing exactly what difference your new change would make.
It is a good suggestion. It
It is a good suggestion. It sounds more difficult to implement than the live preview on the output style editor. We will consider adding this for the next major release.
