What happens if the New Categories "feature" is disabled?

There is an option to disable the creation of categories in the New Categories folder. The manual and some threads on this forum discuss why the New Categories "feature" exists, but is there no word about what happens if the user disables that default option.

Is there a down side to disabling the New Categories folder?

This feature has caused me a huge mess (a topic for another thread). I wish to disable it, but don't want to cause myself more grief than I already have.

I am also interested. I have

I am also interested. I have New Categories with hundreds of entries and while I am trying to move them to my proper Categories folder when procrastinating, this task is nowhere near done after several months of fiddling. I find myself in this situation through normal usage so some improvements (or information) are definitely needed in this area.

I also find that on one of my machines Biblioscape defaults to New Categories even though another categories folder is chosen when the application closes. If I do not remember to change the folder the first thing after starting Biblioscape, I end up creating more mess.

Thanks for looking into this...

Nothing bad will happen if

Nothing bad will happen if you disable it. The idea for "New Categories" folder is to catch all those terms entered in the categories field that do not exist in the categories module. Since user can directly enter anything in the categories field. We thought it is a good idea to catch those terms not in the categories module. If this design causes more confusion and problems, we will consider removing it in the next major release.

.

If you decide not to remove the feature, then I think it should be off by default rather than on.

Also, the distinction between a categories field and a categories module is pretty obtuse to the user. To me it is all the same thing, as it also seems to be for others here, and I think the program should function seemlessly from the users perspective regardless of which module is actually active for the program.

And thanks for your attentions to the various categories problems identified recently and your willingness to fix them.

The categories module was

The categories module was designed for two things: tagging and topic maps. It seems very few users are interested in the latter.

I do not think it needs to

I do not think it needs to be removed, given that it is possible to disable it. Maybe it should be more fully documented.

And any advice on how to make a chosen Categories forlder to become the default?

Thanks.

Do you mean adding

Do you mean adding categories to that folder instead of "New Categories" folder by default?
