Mr.Paul,
Yesterday was the first time for me to try biblioscape and it really shocked me...So want to import my existing files from the disk to the wonderful software.
My basic target is to copy all the file paths and names to Excel file,, slightly modify it and batch import to Biblioscape. After trying lots of ways to import/link the files, I'd found the following issues:
1-The "Attachment" field can only add ONE file, Unlimited is better
It is total different with Endnote and not convenient: should I put “The Presentation Slides.ppt" in one record and put "The Presentation Voice Record.mp3" in another record??
But anyway I found I can only use WinRAR to zip it as one file, Or make use of "URL" field to link to one folder such as: "file://D:\Path-to-the-folder\MOE Presentation 200906" and it works.
2-Only ONE "URL" field is available, Two to Three is better
As mentioned above, URL is good and even there are blanks among the file even folder name, and another good thing is I can put a pdf file links to open it with my default pdf reader through IE. Wonderful.
But the is only unique one...
So I try "Links" fileds, than I found there is a great feature it can link the outside files and there is no limitation of these links,,,,But,
3-There is No way to import/export "Links" to file
At least I can not find any way to export any links, so I can do nothing to automatically import my excel file links.
So how can I do for my attachment? I have to search my record in Biblioscape and than go to IE search the related files through some tools such as "Everything"???
Pls help me , Paul , thanks
The URL and Attachment
The URL and Attachment fields are for storing the full text of the reference. If you have many files you want to include with a reference, you can import them into the Ref_misc field. It has not limit.
But ref_misc field only
But ref_misc field only accept text instead of storing hyperlinks or the files.
I still suggest it can export/import "links" field.
We do plan to add links as a
We do plan to add links as a special field to the style editor.
another thing is that "Attachment" folder can have onlyone layer
All of the attached filed, including downloaded from the web can only store in the root folder.
1-Because it is one layer, so many of my files will have the same name
2-and this "flat" structure is very hard to me to organize the materials, why not to save the attached files hierarchically?
If the files can save in the same folder with the same level of the record, it will be perfect!
i.e.in the Biblioscape, Root -----Level1Folder--Level2Folder---My topic
And in the disk , C:\MyBiblioDB\Attachment----Level1Folder--Level2Folder---My topic.rar
Under the "attachment"
Under the "attachment" folder, you can create sub-folders. Biblioscape still treat it as relative path.
I can manually build the
I can manually build the sub-folders but if the paper are downloaded from the internet, it will still store in the root folder of attachment. So I have to link it to the folder instead of "copy to the attachment folder".
But I have found the BEST way to do this: There are TWO "URL" fields!
I input "http://www.website.com/links_to_the_files/" into the real URL field;
And input "c:\My_File_Folder\My_sub_folder\" into the "Attachment" field.
The result is there will pop up a IE folder window when I click the "attachment" icon.
So it perfectly solved the "link" issue without changing anything.
Thank you Paul!
I don't think this is a good
I don't think this is a good idea because the Attachment field should be reserved for an local copy of the fulltext PDF file.
Thank you Paul for your
Thank you Paul for your suggestion, and I will still try this method for a while to test its effects before I can import "links"field.
Thank you anyway.
