Suggestions regarding "linked files" and "attachments"

I have four related suggestions, regarding attached files and linked files.

1. I find linking files very easy because I have a "Create Link" icon at the top of my main page (not sure if that is standard or if I customized the toolbar). This makes linking a file very fast, and a preferable method to the cumbersome file attachment process.

Setting up an attachment could be equally fast and easy if, in the "Link to File" dialog box there were a check box (off by default each time the box is loaded) for "Link as an Attachment."

2. It would be very handy if a linked file can be loaded (internally or externally, as appropriate) from wherever the link appears. At present this is not possible from the Link panel in the Reference Editor.

3. It would be handy if, upon right-clicking on file link (as displayed in the Preview Panel or in the Reference Editor), it were possible to automatically shoot the pathspec into the Attachement field of the reference record, if that field is blank. (Apparently there is no way to do this by copy and paste, and shooting would be much easier anyway.)

4. It would be great (either automatically or as a user preference) if BScape would use a relative file reference for any attachment that is on the same drive as the database. In this case the relative reference would appear as:

..\pathspec\filename

instead of:

Attachment\pathspec\filename

I ask for the latter only because I am most reluctant to have my collection of documents buried within a database, where they are hidden. My preferred setup is documents in their own folder in the root of my F: drive and the database in its own folder which is also in the root of that drive. It seems to be a reasonable approach and one that is equally as portable as the Attachment folder method, for when BScape is moved between computers.

Please excuse my foibles, but I hope you think some of these ideas have merit. Thanks.

1. A new toolbar button

1. A new toolbar button "Add PDF Attachment" will be added in 8.02.

2. If you double click the link icon, the linked file will be loaded.

3. The Attachment field is for storing a document of the full text. It should be added separated from the linked file.

4. If you always store the file under a root path under C. There is no need to use related path. Because when you move the database to another PC and you move that root folder as well, the path won't be changed.

You are welcome to give the newly uploaded patch a test.
