Here is a work-around for a citation import problem from a web source, and perhaps a more complete fix is possible. The problem seems to be with how some sites generate an export and how that interacts with Windows MIME association for the export. Here is an example citation to download, from the journal Science:
Do others have trouble getting that citation, or is it just me? I have tried it from the internal browser as well as Internet Explorer and Firefox. Of course I have made the necessary setups on the Bscape Option| Import/Export tab and have also followed the instructions on your "Importing References from the Web with Direct Export" webpage.
The problem seems to be that a "citmgr" file is generated by Science, with no extension for the filename. Firefox acts like it is executing the export, but there is no result shows in Bscape (in either the current folder or the on-line session folder). Internet Explorer generates an error message, asking if I want to "find" a program to receive the export or save the file. "Finding a program" produces another screen saying:
MIME Type: application/x-endnote-refer
Description: UnKnown
Windows does not recognize this MIME type.
Clicking Save and OK results in the above CITMGR file, with no extension. I have found that if I instead save the file with a .brf extension, I am then prompted to open the file, and it does import into Bscape. The result is a bit scrambled, however, for example with the DOI number appended to the paper's title. (So my next step is to learn about import filters.)
----- Further Notes: -----
In Firefox I have verified that "application/x-endnote-refer" is correctly set to biblioscape.exe in the correct directory, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to check that setting in IE, though.
I think that if there is a way to make the "application/x-endnote-refer" MIME tag do what it is supposed to, the process could be fully automated. Any thoughts on how to do that?
I tested the link using both
I tested the link using both IE and FireFox. Both worked. The file does have an *.enw extension. The import filter for "EndNote -- Refer" needs to be corrected. It mistakenly mapped the "%R" tag to the "Title" field. It should be removed there and be mapped to the "DOI" field.
I found a successful fix
I found a successful fix here for importing from IE, although I had to do things a bit differetly:
http://www.library.ualberta.ca/uploads/EndNote/AssocOvidCGIwithEndNote.p...
CGI was not a registered file type on my machine. After creating it (see the instructions), I still could not find it on the list, so I created it again and went directly to "change" for the "open with." The choice for EndNoteX2.01 was not available, so I chose Biblioscape. I closed the boxes and reopened them, and CGI still does not appear in the list. I tried importing a citation from Science though, and it works perfectly now. (In RegEdit I can see that CGI is indeed assigned to Biblioscape now, but for some reason CGI doesn't show when I follow the above instructions -- puzzling, but I'm happy.)
I still can't get this to work with Firefox though.
Your %R change did the trick for my DOI problem.
Thanks.
Can you post a sample cgi
Can you post a sample cgi record? Or you can let me know the URL to access the database. So I can give it a test. Thanks, Paul

If you get and export/import error try changing the file extension , just check out a file extensions list and try to change it and then export .
.
1. On this page: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/summary/325/5936/16 , using IE, click "Download Citation."
2. On the next page, click EndNote.
3. I get a box with the choices "Find" and "Save." If I click "Find" I get another window with the error message:
4. Closing that box and choosing "Save" instead, I get a box with a hard drive tree asking me to save the file CITMGR (no extension provided) to my normal download directory. If I click save, the file is saved and that concludes the operation. If instead I add the extension .BRF I am prompted to replace a citmgr.brf file from last night. Clicking "Yes" I get another box saying "Download Complete" and prompting me to "Open," "Open Folder," or "Cancel."
5. Chosing "Open," there is a flash of screen activity and then no further prompts. Returning to BScape, there is the citation in my active folder.
There seem to be two things here that prevent the process from going automatic. One is that the MIME type is not being recognized, and the changes I attempted last night were fluky (see above) and apparently didn't survive a shutdown and reboot. The second problem is that Science is sending the CITMGR file without a file extension. It is clear though that even without the file extension there is an attempt to process the MIME type, which suggests that the problem is that it has not gotten registered to BScape.
I had one Science download work automatically last night, but have been unable to duplicate that success since then. I may have briefly succeeded in assigning the MIME type, but as I said, the process for doing that assignment was fluky and the result seemed tenuous at best.
Larry, I tried the URL
Larry, I tried the URL using IE and the first prompt I got is:
Do you want to open or save this file?
Name: citmgr.enw
Type: EndNote import file
From: sciencemag.org
If I click Open it is automatically imported into Biblioscape since the enw association is changed to Biblioscape on the "Tools | Options" window in Biblioscape. I don't know why the file has no extensin on your PC. If there is anyone else reading this thread, please let me know if you also get the download file without extension.
I test this with both IE8
I test this with both IE8 and Opera10 in Vista SP1. Both work very well. When I click the Endnote after opening the Download Citation, this ref can be automatically imported into my BSP. So I think that you may better check your file association in your pc and always use the Endnote-ref filter as default in the BSP import.

Thanks, Ron. Setting file associations wouldn't do anything for IE (and I spent hours on trying that and researching it on the web), but as noted in my message from yesterday (below) I did get hit upon ways to get it running in Opera and Firefox. IE seems hopeless, though, but since Opera is my #1 browser I'm up and running, and quite happy.
.
When I try the URL with IE (and clicking on EndNote, what I get is:
So there is a problem with the setup of my machine. Also, note that for what I am getting, there is no file extension. The .enw file type is associated with Biblioscape (confirmed through the Control Panel | Folder service), but the association is not being recognized. I just tried setting it to some other program (at random) and then back to Biblioscape, but that didn't help. I can't figure out what is wrong.
Which version of IE do you
Which version of IE do you have installed?
.
8.0.6001.18702. I am running Win-XP with SP3.
I have the same version and
I have the same version and it gets the *.enw extension from the same server. I don't know why.
Solved -- for Opera and Firefox, but not IE
I now have Direct Export running fast and automatic on the Opera (my preference) and Firefox (a distant 2nd choice) browsers. Contrary to all that I read on the web, Opera easily be made to send Direct Exports to Biblioscape. I still can't make IE do it, but that's no loss whatsoever in my book.
HOW TO SET UP DIRECT EXPORT WITH OPERA: In Opera, go to: Tools | Preferences | Advanced | Downloads. Clikc Add, and make these entries in the fields:
Click OK, OK.
WHAT TO DO IF THE BIBLIOSCAPE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIREFOX SETUP DON'T WORK: In Firefox go to: Tools | Options | Applications. For the enw file entry, change the setting from "Use ENW_Auto_File (default)" to "Biblioscape.exe".
For IE, I was unable to find any way to make the above kinds of settings, and even poking around in the Registry I couldn't find any switches to make that would accomplish that.
Anyway, problem definitely solved for my #1 and #2 browsers. Here are two tricks for the help file and manual, I think.
Thank you. I will add Opera
Thank you. I will add Opera support instruction to the manual. Please see the reply by Ron in this thread. He also has not problem with IE.
I got it to work!
This has been frustrating me as well, but your post inspired me to try
again. I did get it to work with Firefox!! Initially I had the same
problem with the citmgr file not downloading with the enw extension, but
through trial and error, I hit upon the following:
In Windows Explorer, hit Tools, Folder Options, File Types
there should be a registered file type enw
if not, add it.
Hit the advanced button
I defined an action there to open with biblioscape
and (I think this is the important part) checked the box to "always show
extension"
These settings should be set
These settings should be set by Biblioscape automatically when you click the button "Associate with Biblioscape" in the "Tools | options" window "Import/Export" tab.
I did hit the button, but it
I did hit the button, but it wasn't done automatically.
