References Editor Toolbar

When creating a series of new references using the 'Create Duplicate' toolbar button the system threw the error:-
"Access violation at address 7C918FEA in module 'ntdll.dll'. Write of address 00000010."

At the time of the error the reference menu bar and all other toolbars failed to display although room for their display existed.

Having selected the OK button to clear the error continuing difficulties were:-

the particular duplicate reference being created at that time failed to populate the fields producing a blank record displaying the user defined fields;

The menu bar and toolbars were still not displayed at that stage.

Selecting the Reference folder icon from the "OUtlook bar" which was displayed resulted in a return to the folder and simple reference display with preview, live preview and formatted preview windows all displaying correctly;

the Reference menu and Reference toolbar were displayed, the faulty blank reference was not displayed until a save reference action was taken;

At that stage when viewing any reference the reference editor toolbar was not visible nor was it available via the right mouse button customise menu shortcuts.

Closing the application results in a series of error messages appearing. (listed later.)

Upon re-opening the application and opening any reference, the reference editor toolbar is still not available.

Searching the help files and trying various options adjustments and 'restore defaults' in the references options did not assist in allowing a redisplay of the reference editor toolbar.

The reference editor toolbar could not be restored from within the program or following a cold system reboot.

The toolbar problem was eventually tracked down to the 'toolbar.ini' file in the 'global' directory.  A backup file to that existed and was used to replace the toolbar.ini resolving the disappearing toolbar problem.

The problem is reproducable but not consistently and appears to occur when the "Create duplicate" menu bar button is used without pausing for a short time after each preceding selection.

Whilst attempting to reproduce the problem a third time the error message produced was:- "Access violation at address 00R03388 in module 'Biblioscape.exe', Read of address FFFFFFFC."

The application closure error messages were:-

1. Biblioscape.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

2. Exception EAccessViolation in module Biblioscape.exe at 003ACEDB.

3. Access violation at address 0058F289 in module 'Biblioscape.exe' Read of address 011A4DBB.

4. Biblioscape has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

5. Biblioscape.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

6. Runtime error  216 at 004F047

7. Biblioscape.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

8. 6. Runtime error  216 at 004F047

I am unable to determine the exact cause of the problem.

Potentially relevant information is:-

display resoltion in use at the time was 1280x1024 with normal font size and Biblioscape being displayed on the full screen;
the cpu is an AMD 1800+;
there is 768 mb RAM;
other than anti-virus, firewall and operating system software no other applications were running at the time.
The anti-virus was in monitor mode but no scanning was taking place.
Notepad was open whilst reproducing the error for the second and third times.

N.B.

Whilst the new forum is good it does seem to exude a rather negative note to me created by the forum topic titles all beginning with "For problems with" which gives a message that good points or practice should not be entered.
Would a plainer '??? module' not allow inclusion of some of the very many positive elements of Biblioscape.

Ian, 1. Thank you for the

Ian, 1. Thank you for the detailed bug report. I can't reproduce the problem. Can you reproduce it after restart? 2. Usually people only come to here when there is a problem. How about change it to "For problems and discussions with..."? Thanks.

For problems

Something more like "Issues with ..." or some other alternative would include that broader category of discussion which I have noticed seems valuable to users of software discussion groups.

I made the changes

I made the changes accordingly. Thanks.

References Editor Toolbar

I was initially able to reproduce the problem a number of times and after both an automatic restart of the computer and a cold reboot (Switched off completely for a short time.) although not consistently every time I attempted to.

I had been speculating whether it was anything to do with the mousekey hotspot size/location, when/the way references are saved to the database, or the sequence of database update.

The problem has not reappeared today whilst working all day with Biblioscape using the same working patterns during the morning session.

Paying attention to the issues I thought may be contributory, during this afternoon I have tried in various ways to reproduce the error to no avail. Most frustrating.

Noting that the last duplicate record created with the "Create duplicate" toolbar button is not saved when moving back to a folder view and hence not visible until a user save or other saving action is taken I did try various alterations in working to see if that was a contributory factor.  No luck.

I have also trialed different navigation techniques with the same negative result.

The computer in use is a stand alone and not normally connected to the internet so there is no chance of any malicious software or network issue affecting it.  The system has appeared to be functioning normally for some time now without any perceivable problems with other applications and is up to date with all current patches and virus and firewall updates.

I will be working with Biblioscape a great deal over the next few weeks and should the problem arise again I will go through the debugger process and pass you the result for your programmers to look at.

Is there any specific debugging information that would be of particular use?

Reference Editor Toolbar - Possible Invalid Pointer Error cause

Lost the Standard References toolbar today, the error message displayed prior to the loss was 'invalid pointer operation' which appeared when selecting a reference in the folder view.

I did not note all of the subsequent error messages at the time and Biblioscape seemed to work correctly afterwards, other than the missing standard references toolbar.

Following that the Duplicate Reference reference editor toolbar error reappeared but could again be solved by replacing the toolbar.ini

Some of the details of that error wer~-

"Acces violation at address 7C918FEA in module 'ntdll.dll'. Write of address 00000026."

The Outlook bar is open
The reference toolbar area is blank,
A blank reference is on display
Changing to folder view
Selecting the visible highest Ref_id shown  e.g. 7110
The reference opens but the reference editor toolbar is missing.
Return to the folder view and a new reference is now visible in that folder.  e.g. 7111
Open reference 7111 to display a blank reference with only the Ref_id, Priority Field, Created by and Date Created fields populated.  All other fields displaying as blank.

It appears still possible to continue working with references without the toolbars at this stage.

Closing the application results in "Biblioscape.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

JIT debugging.

"An exception 'Unhandled Win32 Exception' has occurred in Biblioscape.exe"

Output-Debug.txt contains the initial debug information and has been zipped and will be forwarded to the helpdesk later by e-mail.

Recalling now that the same earlier error occurred the day before yesterday, I believe the 'invalid pointer operation' and loss of the standard reference toolbar may be the initial cause with the duplicate reference reference editor toolbar error merely being a subsequent symptom.

Ian

Ian, I got the file. Thanks.

Ian, I got the file. Thanks. There is a problem with the toolbar saving routine. Lots of users have reported that. I believe the problem is fixed in version 7. The most frustrating thing is to fix a bug that can't be reproduced.

Reference Editor Toolbar

True!

Problems relating to a bug which is not consistently reproducible are equally time consuming and frustrating for users.

My Main toolbar has

My Main toolbar has disappeared and is greyed-out in the Customize dialog. Reading this discussion I recall seeing a complaint about pointers with Biblioscape crashing recently. I am glad to hear the problem is being worked on. But I have an immediate question - how do I get my toolbar back?

Anna, A. Replace the file

Anna,

A.
Replace the file "...\Global\toolbars.ini" with the file "...\Global\toolbars_backup.ini".

B.
1. Go to Windows "Start | Run".
2. Enter "regedit" and click OK button.
3. On the left panel go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | CG Information | Biblioscape 6X | MenuBars".
4. Delete the entry "MenuBars" along with all its children.
5. Close the regedit window.

Thanks,
Paul

Fixed

This did the trick. Thank you very much.
