Importing references

Paul,

I have two questions here.
The first question is about importing references into the Bib. 8 which is similar to what I previously asked. I am sorry to address this similar question again.

1, Duplicate checking fields
I am really hoping that the bib 8 will let users choose checking fields. This will be very useful for users who get references from journal's in press articles, preprints of arxiv or journal websites. That means these recent references are usually not in the database of Web of science yet. Some time later, the articles are formally published, and they appear in the Web of Science. If we importing the these references from web of science, Bib 8 will not find duplicate. However, we do not really want to import them again. If we can choose checking fields, we can find duplicate by using field such as 'title'.

Is it possible that we can choose the checking fields in the panel of importing option?

2, Problem of importing with 'overwrite the old version' option.

In this case, I find that all the setting for the old references are lost. For example, the information of 'priority', 'category', 'RichText', and so on. Usually, we want to keep the above useful information, and only want to update partial information.

The better way is to only update the fields that the importing references have some content.

Suppose that the above two functions are realized. Biblioscape 8 will provide the best way to successfully handle the references from journal's current issue, preprints form arxiv and journal's in press. They are usually not included in the Web of science and Scopus yet. Some time later we find they appear in the Web of Science. Then we can use overwrite option to update the old references if we can choose check fields.

Thanks.

Both suggestions will be

Both suggestions will be implemented in version 8 final release. Thanks, Paul

Possible improvement when overwriting

First, thanks very much for implementing this function. I would like to discuss some possible improvements for overwriting.

1, Do not move the references
When we select the 'overwrite the old version' option, the Bib will move the old references to the selected folder. For fresh references, they should go to the selected folder. However, for old references, they should not change their folders when updating by overwriting. Otherwise, the organization will be destroyed.

2, Keep custom information as much as possible, such as links and priority
When overwriting, Bib 8 can keep reference mark, rich text, category and attachments now. But the information for links, and priority are lost when overwriting.

In fact we can select "fields not to import data" to avoid some problems. But these chosen fields can not be remembered. Furthermore, 'links' are not in listed in the fields list.

A possible solution is that Bib 8 can remember the "fields not to import data" that we do not want to update. Also, 'links' should be included in the list.

Thanks again.

1. When set to overwrite

1. When set to overwrite old record, the old record will be deleted. The new record can only reside in one folder. So it will be more convenient if you organize records with categories.

2. The Priority field will be kept. The Links to the old record cannot be transfered.

Thanks,
Paul

I agree with those but if

I agree with those but if implemented, please make all of these choices optional and clearly documented.
