I have found that I need to create my own style and I am adding features to it as I find that I need them. However, occasionally when I update the output style Biblioscape strips out all the formatting. Subsequent attempts to restore the formatting then corrupt the output style definition completely. The only way to recover seems to be to delete all fields from the definition and re-enter them and their formatting again from scratch.
For example, I have a journal output style that produces the following for the footnote 'David J. MacLeod, "The Virginal Conception of Our Lord in Matthew 1:18-25," Emmaus Journal 8: 1 (Summer 1999 ): 3-43'. The equivalent Bibliography entry was similar except that it used different punctuation, that is until I spotted a slight error (something to do with the punctuation of the date) and tried to correct it. After pressing update to see the results, Biblioscape had transformed my entry to this 'The Virginal Conception of Our Lord in Matthew 1:18-25Emmaus Journal81: 3-43.' Looking at the definition, all the formatting appears to have been stripped back to its default values, e.g. the name formatting is back at the default and the quotes round the title are no longer in the definition. Trying to restore the formatting to the fields makes matters worse. E.g. defining the title field to start and end with double quotes and the Journal name field to be in italics gives this 'The Virginal Conception of Our Lord in Matthew 1:18-25Emmaus Journal81": 3-43.' Checking the journal name definition it has reverted back to plain text setting again and the title definition no longer has the double quotes in it.
I suspect the problem may be linked to removing elements from the definition (e.g. to remove year and replace it with free-format year) as that seems to be something of a common denominator. Is this a problem with a known cause that I can try and avoid? Is there any way to easily back up and restore definitions?
Hebrew fonts
Hello, I saw your example of reference above and realized that you have been using biblioscape for Biblical Studies, like me. How do you implement Hebrew/Greek fonts inside the software. That has been a puzzle for me... By the way, I've experienced the problem you have posted, but am unable to reproduce the steps. Thanks
Hebrew fonts
How do I use Hebrew fonts with Biblioscape? I am afraid the simple answer is that I don't! I was attracted to the package at a time when Hebrew fonts were not a consideration for me. Now they are and I have been holding off a forced migration to a more suitable product on the basis of cost. I have therefore accepted that I will have to compromise with a messy, part manual solution. I use Biblioscape simply to format the entries as far as I can, so that I get consistency, then I edit the end result manually to add in any Hebrew, Greek and take account of any difficult to set up formatting stuff. Its a great shame, because Biblioscape has a lot of potential and I now loose most of it, notably cool stuff like shooting references and using Biblioscape for notes. The truth is I barely get any benefits from the level of automation I can still use, but as I do get some and the program is already paid for I am gritting my teeth and trying to put off a move until Unicode support arrives.
If you want to enter Hebrew,
If you want to enter Hebrew, you can set Windows default language to Hebrew (http://support.biblioscape.com/node/571). But this won't work if you need to have both Hebrew and another non-western language like Chinese. We plan to add Unicode support in version 9.
Unicode support in Version 9
On 14 Jan 2008 a support rep posted the statement 'One of the main goals of version 8 is unicode support.' (http://support.biblioscape.com/node/50). As V8 has been a disappointment in that respect, can I ask how far off V9 is likely to be?
That was the original plan.
That was the original plan. Our development also depends on the release cycle of the tools and libraries we use. There is not enough time to include Unicode in version 8. Lots of times users want to know our development plan. I can share with users about our plans, but it doesn't mean the feature will be added as planned. I don't have a time frame for version 9 release. We usually release a major upgrade every 1-2 years. Thanks, Paul
Entering Hebrew
Thanks Paul. As I need support for Hebrew, Greek and Latin in pretty much equal parts, together with occasional Syriac, a single language solution is little help to me. However, I thought I would give your suggestion a try anyway. My input languages are set up pretty much just as http://support.biblioscape.com/node/571 specifies and I can switch between them with no problem when using MS Word. Yet, changing "language for non-Unicode applications" from English to Hebrew and re-booting does not enable me to enter Hebrew in Biblioscape or any of my other non-unicode supporting programs. In each case שנב comes out as ùðá.
Similiar bugs have been
Similiar bugs have been reported before. When editing the styles, there is a certain sequence of editing can mess up the style. This bug is so elusive, we have never been able to reproduce it. I have created many styles, but never experienced this bug. Since creating styles involve many steps, the few users who experienced this bug can never reproduce it. If you know the exact steps to reproduce this bug, please let me know. Thanks, Paul
This elusive bug
I am afraid I have been unable to reproduce it to order, but at least four out of five times it has occurred immediately following the deletion of a field from the output style. I will keep my eyes open and if I can pin it down any more I will let you know.
Which field did you delete.
Which field did you delete. Is this field present in the list more than once? If you can pin down this bug. We can fix it in a day. Thanks, Paul
That elusive bug
It still has not happened again, though I am making less changes now. On the latest occasion it was the date field I deleted and it was the first of two in the record. As I recall the first two times it happened I was deleting the date field and I then thought 'Ahah! Got you'. Then the next time it was the deletion of some other field (Title?). The forth time I was no longer thinking in terms of it being field related. I have tried to repeat the sort of changes that I was making when it happened and it all worked fine.
I am not sure if this is enough to be of any use to you.
