My database contains records for which I will later receive updated records that I know I will want to keep instead of the old ones. In other words, I will not need to compare them to the older records they match because I know I will want to replace those with the newer, updated versions. Cases like these and others have made me wish that I could select from the following options (perhaps as radial buttons, since there aren't any other useful options) each time I import records into Biblioscape:
What to do with duplicate records:
1) Import, but do not mark
2) Import and mark new versions
3) Import and mark old versions
4) Overwrite old versions
5) Do not import
The 1st option is currently Biblioscape's default behavior and it could be the default selected option of the five, but I bet the 2nd option is more useful to most people. You might consider posting a poll on the website to learn which of the five options the majority of users would like to be the default.
The 2nd option should be the default, in my opinion, as I bet it is ultimately more useful to most people than importing duplicates without marking them. If having Biblioscape check for duplicates during the import process slows it down too much, maybe you could, instead of that, make selecting this option automatically launch the "Eliminate Duplicates" tool immediately after the import has finished.
The 3rd option is like the 2nd, but it marks the old, preexisting versions of duplicate records for those who would prefer to have the old versions marked. Biblioscape's "Eliminate Duplicates" tool currently marks the newer versions of duplicates, which forces people who delete the old versions to unmark the new versions afterwards.
The 4th option is for people in the situation, like me, of knowing that they want the newer versions of the records they are importing to replace the older versions already in the database.
The 5th option is currently what happens when one enables the "Check for duplicate while importing (slow)" check box on the "Options" tab of the "Import References" window.
