I have deleted and renamed a few of my categories and now, to my surprise, in the Inspector Window|Categories Tab (at the bottom) some of the references display the new names together with the old ones that do not exist as categories anymore in the categories tree. Is this a feature (and then how does it work?) or a bug? And how can I get rid of these entries?
It is a bug. You can get rid
It is a bug. You can get rid of by go to "Edit | Replace" and limit the replacement operation to Categories field. Please let me know the steps to reproduce it. Thanks.

I deleted some of my categories using the right mouse click in the categories tab. However, some of the entries in the categories field remain. I am not sure if I can come up with any other, special detail.
I shall save a version of my database now before trying to clean things up. Let me know if you would like to have a look at it.
As for cleaning up, it is fine to use Find/Replace when I know the terms to look for but as I have deleted and renamed quite a few categories, this is not so easy…
deleting but not deleting, why?
After right-clicking, Biblioscape asks if the categories should also be removed from the records. I just tried this again on two references. I say yes to the option but one entry in the categories field got removed and one not…
In general, what is the purpose of the option to not delete category tags from references when a category is deleted? It seems if the user wants to delete a category, the entries for this category in the references should also be removed. What is the scenario when this is not wanted? Also, why is it useful to have textual entries in the categories field that are not displayed as categories and cannot be manipulated through the interface?
In version 7.30, the
In version 7.30, the tagging routine will be improved. The bug you mentioned will be fixed.
When users want to delete a category, users may want to keep the tagging intact. User can still use that tag to retrieve records by using fast search. The categories field can also be directly edited without using the categories interface. If more users think this prompt is really not necessary, we will consider removing it in the future. Thanks.

What happens if the user renames a category in the category tab? Are the entries in the references also get renamed? My understanding that this is the case.
However, this is not the behaviour in an open and yet unsaved reference. Instead, the reference gets both the old and the new names. After the reference is saved, closed and reopened, the new name is doubled. This does not look like a desired behaviour. Also, the list of selected categories at the right bottom in an open reference does can be different from the content of the Categories field which adds to confusion.
Biblioscape will do the
Biblioscape will do the replacement of changed category name automatically. But it will not work if a reference is opened in its own window and is in eidting mode. But is should not have both old and new category. Could you let me know the exact steps to reproduce the problem. I cannot reproduce it. Thanks.

I strongly support keeping the functionality! I (intentionally) use several categories folders with overlapping categories and sub-categories and sometimes want to delete a category only from one folder or main category branch but keep it as a tag. Thanks, Lars

Thanks.
If you decide to keep this functionality, maybe we need to have a function that could make categories from tags to keep the balance?
