I am trying to format a document that has many images.
When Winword tries to save it in rtf format it hangs forever and eventually says
document cannot be saved (any version of winword, up to Winword 2007).
Is there any way to prevent Biblioscape from saving in rtf format?
Rtf format cannot handle images well, this is a well known problem: does this mean that
Biblioscape cannot be used when your paper has images?
Thanks,
LCH
How about using linked
How about using linked images only?

linked as in ... ?
I don't really understand what you mean.
I need to have my paper printed out, sent as attached, and so on:
it really needs to have images embedded.
Thanks.
Embedding images in Word is
Embedding images in Word is bad practice if the documents are of any considerable length. Files grow huge, saving and autosaving slow, crashes frequent. You can do printing with linked images, embed them right before distribution into specific distribution copies or in PDFs, possibly compressing them for these copies as required. Link management in Word is pretty bad but still better then embedding… Help will help if you have not used linking before...
I tried experimenting with
I tried experimenting with linked images instead of embedded.
Biblioscape now CAN format the manuscript.
That is a step forward.
But a new problem arises: all image sizes are changed in the process of saving the file to rtf format,
with the result that the layout of the paper gets totally screwed up.
Unfortunately I have some 50 images in the paper and I cannot resize by hand every single image
every time I format or unformat the document: that would be way too much work.
Any help is appreciated.
Your previous tip about embedding was really good. Thanks.
Use a dedicated DTP program for layout
I know what you mean. Word is a mess when it comes to images. It is not to do with RTF only, they get resized and moved in doc or docx too. However, it is still workable most of the times, I just had to deal with a book-size project that had more than 100 images. It should NOT be resizing them or messing them up in any other way. Still, the only long-term solution is not to use Word for layout when images or any decent typography is necessary. Quark, InDesign or FrameMaker (for technical documents) would be a joy to work with by comparison. Of course, automatic formatting with Biblioscape is not possible there unfortunately...
Biblioscape can format
Biblioscape can format documents in RTF or HTML.
Indeed. Which means that
Indeed. Which means that people wishing to do a professional layout have to transfer already-formatted text into their software. Which is OK unless other automated unctionality is already integrated with the text in a DTP program (e.g. cross-references, footnotes, etc.). But I do not see the easy way out given that not many people use such programs for academic writing... After my document is laid out in a DTP program, I have to add references in-line and to the bibliography manually if I have to hoping that I shall not have to tweak the style as this will be a huge and tricky task...
I cannot reproduce the image
I cannot reproduce the image size change problem when saving as RTF. Can you email me a small sample file in rtf and doc to show the problem? Thanks. support@biblioscape.com
I sent you a test file. You
I sent you a test file.
You can see it is not possible to retain size after you save: if you change
size of the image it will go back to original when you reopen the doc.
that prevents any image formatting/resizing because biblioscape formats
the doc only after saving it in rtf.
Thanks,
LCh
Yes, I can reproduce the
Yes, I can reproduce the image size change problem when saving in RTF. To get around this problem, I saved it in doc format, the image size change is retained. You only need to save it in RTF before formatting with Biblioscape. Thanks.
I don't understand what you
I don't understand what you mean.
This is the scenario.
I have a doc with images (linked or embedded, no difference in this case).
I want to format the bibliography.
When I do, BS saves the doc in rtf and therefore CHANGES all formatting of the images
LOSING all original layouts and positions.
Given the high number of images, and the fact that when you work on a paper like that you
need to format and unfomat the bibliography SEVERAL times, it seems BS is unusable in this
scenario.
Or maybe not: I really do hope so.
BTW, the losing of the image
BTW, the losing of the image layout
happens every time you save a rtf document, no matter what.
NOT ONLY when you save a .doc into a .rtf

Please try the following work around (I got this from Microsoft web site )
Before you first save your document, change the wrapping style of the picture. To do so, follow these steps:
