any reason this can't be the default. I just closed a reference by the upper right hand close button after entering a bunch of notes in one of the fields, which were lost. Would anyone ever want to close and not save? Just a thought

Yes, they might want that -
Yes, they might want that - I for one often use texts as palettes for mixing ideas that I cut out before closing without saving! But perhaps Biblioscape should ask to keep or discard changes when the user closes a note (or a reference) in the way you describe.
