In the Output Style Editor, I can choose "Use Date Freeform when Year is empty". I would like to suggest to add another option: "Use Date Freeform when Date Freeform is not empty".
The reason for this is quite obvious: I always enter the year in the year-field, so I can sort entries and can provide the year of it is desired in the output style.
Thanks, Volker
Is it possible to also add
Is it possible to also add an option "Use Year_Pub when Date_Pub is empty" in the Date_Pub field edit?
The reason is similar to the one mentioned by Volker: For sorting reasons I always enter the year in the year-field, and mostly this is what is needed in the formatted reference. However, some references (as some court cases) need the full date in the output (while other cases need only the year). At present, I have to use a special reference type, but with the said option I could enter the full date in the Date_Pub field (while leaving the year in the Year_Pub field).
Thanks, Lars
Lars, I am not sure about
Lars, I am not sure about this one. If the specific reference type requires the date, putting just year there will not be right. It may be better to just mark that record and try to find the date later. Is there a style that allows the use of year when full date is not available? If there is, please let me know the reference, I will look it up. Thanks.
Paul, I was particularly
Paul, I was particularly thinking of citing US judicial opinions.
If a case is available in electronic format but not yet in print, you have to mention the exact date, e.g.:
United States v. Moore, No. 04-2183, 2005 U.S. App. LEXIS 16211 (7th Cir. Oct. 13, 2005)
But once a case is published in a reporter you have to mention the year only:
Kestrel Coal Ltd v. Joy Global Inc., 362 F.3d 401 (7th Cir. 2004)
However, your post made me think again about this and I will continue to use two separate reference types (one for unpublished and one for published cases). So I'd like to revoke my suggestion.
Thanks, Lars
It is a very good suggestion
It is a very good suggestion indeed. We will implement this in version 7.24. It will be useful in some cases for certain reference types. Thank you very much!
Very good idea,
Very good idea, Volker!
